Four Periods of Population Aging Forecast in China

Researchers forecast that in the 2100s, China will experience four periods of population aging:

Period of accelerated increase (1999-2010): The proportion of the elderly will rise by an annual average of 0.1 percentage point. China has already become an aged society; however, the pace of aging has not been so fast.

Period of fast increase (2010-2040): This is the period when China's population aging develops the fastest. Annually, the proportion will increase by 0.4 percentage point on average.

Period of slow increase (2040-2060): Although increasing by 0.1 percentage point annually, the proportion of people aged 65 and over will have reached 22% and will be still growing. It is estimated that the proportion will reach the peak in the 2060s; however, it won't exceed 25%.

Period of stability (after 2060): During this time, both the number and proportion of the elderly will remain stable.
