The State Family planning Commission organized and undertook the National population and reproductive health survey in 1997. The purposes of undertaking this survey were to review the trend of population dynamics since the formulation of the “Eighth Five-Year Plan? learn the contraceptive practice of Chinese couples of childbearing age, their reproductive health status and the needs for family planning services with a view to provide scientific basis for further improvements in management on the family planning program and the quality of services.

This survey was conducted in two phrases. The items for the first phase of the survey include basic background of population and background of project communities; those for the second phrase of the survey include knowledge, attitude and practice of childbearing, contraception and reproductive health as well as their needs both for family planning and life and production related services. There are about 100 items contained in this survey. In the first phase of survey, a probability proportional sampling method was adopted to sort out 1041 sample units among 337 counties/cities/districts across the country. Totally, 186089 persons were registered, of which 169687 were permanent residents. In the second phase, 16090 women of childbearing age were selected from those female respondents who had been interviewed in the first phase but only 15213 of them were interviewed. The samples scrutinized in the second phase were automatically weighted.
